College of Social Work in Toruń

The college is a public school dependent to the board of Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship that educates social workers through day and extramural courses. The process of learning lasts for three years, i.e. six semesters where each semester finishes with an exam session. The learning process is accomplished after the final exam which gives students the title of social worker or the final exam held by Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, which gives bachelor degree of the Pedagogy and Psychology Department. This degree enables students to continue learning for Master degree in pedagogy.
The studies are divided into 6 areas:
a) subject of general knowledge, e.g. English, PE, information technology, logics and philosophy.
b) subject of basic knowledge, e.g. psychology, basics of health sociology, social economy, social research methods, ethics, sociology, etc.
c) line subjects, e.g. social pedagogy, social psychology, interpersonal communication, social pathology
d) special subjects, e.g. social policy, statistics, law, special pedagogy, psychotherapy, business and management, social problems and social affairs, social work ethics, diploma seminary, etc.
e) specialization: social projects, supervision, family therapy, therapy workshop, unemployment and jobs, organizing local people, rehabilitation of the disabled
f) practicals (work experience): students have the opportunity to choose from a number of social institutions, such as social welfare centers, residential institutions, childcare and children welfare services, penal institutions, residential services and in associations, foundations and organizations focusing on helping the people in need.
1. theoretical and practical - providing professional help to individuals or families suffering from poverty, orphanhood, homelessness, unemployment, addiction, difficulties in bringing up children (in single parent families or families with many children to nourish), difficulties with coming to terms with every day life after leaving penal institutions and dealing with natural disasters. These include:
ˇ analysis, monitoring and evaluation of social needs
ˇ providing information and help with solving life problems of people in difficult situations
ˇ supporting people in obtaining help from local government, as well as other institutions and organizations
ˇ activating new forms of help
ˇ initiating and participating in social problems research (diagnosis of needs), monitoring and evaluation of various programmes and actions
2. skills needed to run the tasks and achieving the goals. These include:
ˇ observation skill, analysis and conclusion drawing
ˇ skills connected with applying the knowledge of law
ˇ creative skills of problem-solving
ˇ skills of organizing work and group leading
ˇ monitoring skill
ˇ skills of finding the funds
ˇ decision making skills and quick social intervention
The graduates of this field will find employment in social welfare centers, childcare and children welfare services, residential services and in associations, foundations and non-government organizations focusing on helping the people in need.
