Carer in the social welfare center
The students attend two-year day or extramural studies. They are educated to be professional staff in social welfare centers and residential institutions where they are first contact workers, accompanying the residents, organizing stimulating activities for them and advising them on health matters.
The curriculum is divided into four major areas of knowledge:
1. theory and practice of social work: psychology, pedagogy, law, gerontology, sociology and ethics;
2. elements of medicine and medical care: promotion of healthy lifestyle, elements of psychotherapy, rehabilitation and others;
3. methods of therapy: planning and organizing free time, elements of art therapy, physical education and activating methods;
4. skills helpful for a carer: interpersonal communication, computer science. There are also many forms of practicals. At the end of the course, students take the final exam.
The graduates find employment in social welfare centers, residential institutions and in all sorts of social welfare services.
The students attend one-year day or extramural course. The main aim of the course is to prepare the students to care for the handicapped because of their old age or illnesses and lonely people of weak mental, physical or psychological health in their own households.
The curriculum is focused on teaching professional skills of how to care for needy people through direct contact with them. The subjects are, for example: elements of social pedagogy, special pedagogy, general and social psychology, developmental psychology, methodology of work with the disabled, law, business and management, first aid, dietetics, methodology of free time planning, sign language, computer science, elements of interpersonal communication and many practicals which broaden the theoretical knowledge obtained at school. The teaching methods are mainly lectures, classes and workshops. The studies are completed with a final exam.
The graduates find employment in charitable organizations like, for example, the Polish Red Cross, The Polish Committee of Social Welfare, and in many other organizations dealing with health visiting.
Assistant for the disabled
The students attend one-year day or extramural course. The main aim of the course is to prepare the students to care for the disabled as far as improving their life conditions is concered. This can be achieved through facilitating every day life, promoting independence, ensuring the conditions for self-rehabilitation, supporting and improving the system of social help for the handicapped by creating special rehabilitation programmes for individuals, and finally monitoring the progress of rehabilitation.
The main job for an assistant is to participate in the life of the family of the disabled actively, as well as taking part in all the programmes of the local social institutions that aim at helping the family, motivating them to active participation in rehabilitation process, and administering first aid if necessary.
